Biomedical Engineering Seminar Abstract
Fall 2003 October 13th- Eric R. Craine, PhD, Western Research Company, Inc.

A Small Research Company Environment
- pdf version of the abstract

Abstract
The small, privately held corporation is one of several employment options for scientists and engineers to contemplate. They offer unique opportunities, but require creativity to deal with challenging limitations. This presentation will offer some background on one such company based in Tucson. It will include a brief discussion of several of the product development projects characteristic of the company, including digital imaging colposcopy (related to cervical cancer), computerized gastrointestinal auscultation (related to Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and diabetic gastric emptying), and digital imaging related to early detection of skin cancer and melanoma. The third part of this presentation will incorporate general discussion with the audience to address areas of interest related to this type of scientific enterprise.
