Students are encouraged to perform web searches and read additional
materials about the presenter or topic.
COURSE GOALS: This course intends to broaden
the biomedical engineer’s research exposure with presentations
on a variety of academic as well as private sector related topics.
Each presentation will include a research section but may also
present additional, work environment related information. Presenters
may be local, from other Arizona institutions or from out of state
institutions. Ph.D. candidates from the biomedical engineering
program are strongly encouraged to schedule their dissertation
defense to coincide with this seminar.
EXAMS: There will be no exam.
GRADING: Grades will be based on your attendance,
as determined by initialing the weekly attendance sheet. Maximal
grade can be achieved by missing less than three seminars (<3).
A seminar is one presentation by a speaker invited by the course
coordinator. Co-hosted seminars are counted half for grading purposes.
If you are unable to attend a seminar you can maintain maximal
grade if you
· explain a class conflict in advance if the seminar is
held at times different then indicated above
· write an abstract (¾ to 1 page) about the missed
presenter’s previous research (maximum of 3)
· present (poster or talk) at an academic seminar or scientific
meeting during seminar time
· teach a lecture related to your research during seminar
time
· attend two presentations at another academic research
seminar, preferably related to your own research (please discuss
with coordinator in advance)
· had an emergency, such as the need for immediate care
for yourself or your family.
You cannot compensate with work for which you will also receive
credit in another course.
